What Does A Concussion Recovery Program Do?

by | Oct 7, 2024

Have you suffered a concussion?  Specifically, “an acute neurophysiological event related to blunt impact or other mechanical energy applied to the head, neck, or body (with transmitting forces to the brain), such as from a sudden acceleration, deceleration, or rotational forces”.  You may have taken a tumble skiing, hit the ice playing hockey, or fallen in your own home.

Typically, a concussion will not show up on a CT scan. But you can still feel not quite yourself. You may feel dizzy, nauseous, confused, or have trouble sleeping – within minutes to hours after the impact.

Call the Progression Muscle, Bone and Joint Clinic and a physiotherapist will assess to see what is going on. The assessment will include a medical history and specific testing of your cranial nerves, eyes, neck and overall strength and mobility. Next a kinesiologist will assess your balance and endurance. Finally, an occupational therapist may assess your memory, mood, sleep and how you feel. This C-Program involves the combination of a physiotherapist (PT), occupational therapist (OT) and kinesiologist (Kin).

The program is designed for either:

1. Acute concussion patients (concussion less than 3 months)
2. Post concussion patients (concussion between 3-12 months)
Our therapists involved in this program at Progression have additional training and expertise in concussion management. Our approach is based on current concussion science and best practice, with the goal being to help you understand what is going on, what will happen and if the proper steps are taken, and how to ensure the most positive outcome in your recovery.

Early Access Concussion Recovery Program (ICBC clients)

This program is for patients who have had a motor vehicle accident (MVA) and are in the first 12 weeks since the accident and have sustained a concussion. The referral to the program must come from the patient’s ICBC adjuster and can be initiated to the adjuster from the primary treatment provider. This 6-week program (3x a week) involves a physiotherapist (PT), occupational therapist (OT) and kinesiologist (Kin) who will focus on a concussion specific approach. The program is individualized with a strong focus on education, physical activity, vestibular work, balance exercises and goal setting. The overall goal of the program is to improve function and assist with return to work, return to school, return to caregiving duties, or return to important activities of daily living.
