Don’t Let Osteoarthritis Pain Slow You Down

by | Nov 15, 2024

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip and knee is very common and is a leading cause of pain, loss of movement and function. A popular misconception is ‘that there isn’t anything that you can do about it and that you require a joint replacement’. The reality is that Osteoarthritis varies considerably depending on the stage of the process. Treatment/management/ rehabilitation needs to be tailor made for the stage of the disease and the individual, and there is no one size that fits all.
Management is most effective during the earlier stages of OA, but research has demonstrated that there are significant benefits from non-surgical management even during the late stages of OA.

The clinical team at Progression Muscle, Bone and Joint Clinic have a unique and comprehensive program to help manage the symptoms and loss of function associated primarily with Osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. This covers the full spectrum of the condition from early stages to late stages and even post operative management. It showcases the multidisciplinary and collaborative approach that we foster which is one of a kind in the Okanagan.

The program is aimed at providing specific treatment and rehabilitation based upon your individual needs at the most appropriate time coupled with how the disease is affecting you. This may include a combination of education, an exercise program, manual mobilization of the joints, an injection into the joint, bracing options, and possibly surgery in later stages. Our team can expertly perform the most complex procedures required to relieve pain and to preserve or restore normal function to hips and knees.

Join Our 6-Week Osteoarthritis Exercise Program

At Progression we offer a 6 week group exercise program that is run by our trained and skilled Kinesiologist(s). This program focuses on specific strength and conditioning for both hip and knee Osteoarthritis. These sessions run regularly throughout the year and are an excellent source to ensure you have a comprehensive exercise program.

Will I need surgery?

Your care plan should involve education about osteoarthritis, lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity, eating healthier, weight-loss, and doing therapeutic exercises. Many hip and knee problems can be managed well without surgery, but if required, joint replacement surgery can be carried out as a last resort. Dr. Charlie Secretan is among the most respected arthroplasty (joint replacement) Surgeons in British Columbia and has introduced cutting edge joint replacement technology to the Okanagan Valley.
If surgery is necessary, then we provide the comprehensive education and exercise in advance to prepare you for the procedure (prehabilitation) and the support and treatment (post op rehabilitation) following the surgery to ensure you maximize your function and quality of life.
